The sash window service: Rot repairs
Sills
From time to time the structural timbers are found to be beyond repair and it is necessary to carry out the replacement of sills. We take a traditional heritage approach which requires the full removal and replacement of the entire sill section. Although this is a little more costly (around £20) than other 'repairs' (where chunks of wood are stuck or screwed on) it is significantly longer lasting and preserves the construction of the window in its original form.
If the sill has only suffered minor damage (less than 20% rot) we may suggest a resin filler type repair because the remaining good timber is normally of a very good quality and worth preserving.
Sashes.
Occasionally the lower rails on the sashes fail often because the putty work has not been maintained and moisture has penetrated into the timbers. In the first instance we will examine to see if we can repair or replace the sections. Sometimes it is necessary to replace the entire sash as the damage is such that to repair it would cost more than to replace it. We always talk about the options and agree the schedule on each window with our clients before proceeding.
