Spiral balance history

Spiral balances have been around for nearly 80 years but have mainly been used in the UK since the 1960's. The later designs rely on draught seals and brushes to keep out the draughts and these need to be replaced every 10-15 years.

The sash window service:

A spiral balance window is a modern version of a sash window that uses spring balances to lift the sashes up and down. Early wooden versions were made without draught seals just like the traditional sash window but contemporary versions have foam and rubber seals to reduce draughts. In recent times tilt mechanisms so have been added so that the sashes can be opened internally for cleaning. After about 15 years the balances begin to fail and the seals wear thin (sometimes they are over painted) and need to be replaced.

The sash window service now offers a spiral balance service that can repair and re-seal nearly all types of spiral balance windows. Telephone for details.
