It is normally possible to convert your existing sash windows to take new double glazed sashes. There are a number of small compromises in that the moulding detail is less pronounced, the new sashes are relatively heavy and typically you lose some degree of opening to acommodate the weight for the sashes. However the Uvalues (a measure of heat loss - lower being better) can be significantly improved from the average value of 4.5 for your current window to as low as 1.9 when you incorporate a draught reduction system. Building regulationsfor new build require a minimum U value of 2.2.

To convert to double glazing it is necessary to build and install new sashes which are then fitted into the existing box frame. These are as far as practical copies of the original sashes. If your windows have one or more glazing bars then we use a single double glazed unit for the sash upon which we stick imitation glazing bars - from a short distance these look like the real thing.

It’s not a cheap option but as well as improving the energy efficiency, comfort and warmth of your home, it will maintain the character and appearance of the original windows.  Typically you will pay in the region of £750 plus VAT@20% to retrofit two new sashes on the correct weight with a draught reduction system into each window, however this compares favourably with the cost of modern uPVC alternative which are ill suited to the Victorian or Edwardian house.   For further information telephone the office on 01242 649131 or 07950 888234
