DOUBLE GLAZING YOUR SASHES
We are often asked if it is possible to double glazed the existing windows and the answer is yes!
Approaches to double glazing: Because traditional sashes are single glazed and therefore the glass is on the outside they don't easily convert to having a double glazed unit installed with the glass rebated on the inside. We find that in most instances it is better to start again with the actual sashes and build hardwood copies to match the original windows.
Cost: A typical cost of this service is between £799.99 - £999.00* per window (plus VAT) to include two new sashes, additional weight to counter balance, draught proofing fittings and installation. The new sashes are optionally supplied fully painted, with brass hardware so it looks just like new.
(*excluding repairs to sill or box frames if required).
Is double glazing the correct solution?
Whilst thinking about double glazing we also need to keep in mind the historic nature of our properties and in many instances double glazing is not the correct solution (indeed in most listed building you will not be given permission to double glazed the sash windows) . There are other ways such as combinations of blinds, lined curtains, shutters and secondary glazing that will achieve the same (in some instances) better heat and sound control. We will do our best to give you all the information you need to make an informed decision.
